The debut, demo album ‘POISONED’ from the Guyanese, PUNK / DEATH
metal rock band BRUTUS.
This not so old outfit, has been rehearsing together since the 6 of September
1998. After a few live gigs at the Sidewalk Café and Jazz Club and some other
unmentionable places, hot dogs and bar-b-q sales, lots of hard work and some
large donations from fans and friends, the boys finally went into the studio and
came out with their first recording effort ‘POISONED’.Seven original songs
which were all recorded on one day. Quite a feat for this young and still
evolving band. BRUTUS demo album ‘POISONED’ is a very, solid and powerful
sounding recording which serves to proudly demonstrate the abilities and
potential of this intense, aggressive heavy metal band that calls themselves
BRUTUS. Thirty two minutes of Guyanese heavy metal. This is definitely a good
buy from a local South American Act that is delivering a ‘BREED’ of music
uncommon in these parts except ‘Sepultura’ (Brazil), ‘Bleed’ (Trinidad),
‘Pearls To Swine’, ‘Stone Blind’, ‘Tech
XXI, ‘Burning
Bush’(Guyana).
The lyrics of the seven songs presented on BRUTUS
demo album ‘POISONED’ deals with a variety of subjects matters
ranging from band room rules, brutal social commentary, the origin of humans,
horror/science fiction and even philosophy of life. Truly an intellectual,
interesting and humorous collection of lyrics.
Musically BRUTUS has engineered
their approach into a strange experimental brew of PUNK /TRASH rhythms with HARD
/ GRINDCORE, ‘OL SCHOOL, POWER / BLACK / DEATH and GOTHIC metal, thrown in, to
make it all more interesting. The music and vocal voicing (with a little
subtleties) is reminiscent of many, a good and kickin’ stuff as such
established foreign bands like ‘Queensryrche’, ‘King Diamond’, ‘The
Accused’ to name a few.
Brutus Debut Demo album
“Poisoned” was released on the
29th of July, 2000, at the Side Walk Cafe and Jazz Club. On that same evening
Brutus head lined a gig, with opening bands Burning Bush and Tech XXI.
Promotional activities geared
towards this release included coverage of the gig by sections of the media and
the press, distributing flyers and interviews on the national radio stations,
press, and television stations. But due to the lack of finance, we were unable
to carry out a full scale promotional drive.
Achievements since that long
awaited release of the album ‘POISONED’ have been hampered by a lack of
publicity which was beyond our control but we have had a good response from our
hardcore fans, this includes being hired to play out at a private party; one
talk show host was so impressed by our dedication in the face of the hostile
musical environmental and tastes in Guyana that she invited us to play at her
show, ‘Rhythm Nation’ fourth anniversary show featuring other local talents
at the ‘Night Flight’ Disco in Georgetown. Mr. Burchmore Simon of Kross
Kolor Records was also impressed with the bands’ effort to become the premier
rock band in Guyana and gave us the opportunity to display ‘POISONED’ and
our merchandise (hand painted ‘T’ shirts, Posters) at GuyExpo 2000, 16-17th
August 2000.He also gave us the opportunity to play at the Main Big Lime held on
Main Street, Georgetown on the 17th December 2000.Burchmore was impressed by the
improvised technique that Brutus used to produce their cassettes which entitled
degutting TDK cassettes and cutting the tape to the required gave us the opportunity to display ‘POISONED’ and our merchandise (hand painted ‘T’ shirts, Posters) at GuyExpo 2000, 16-17th August 2000.He also gave us the opportunity to play at the Main Big Lime held on Main Street, Georgetown on the 17th December 2000.Burchmore was impressed by the improvised technique that Brutus used to produce their cassettes which entitled degutting TDK cassettes and cutting the tape to the required length and then recording on these modified cassettes which were then fifteen minutes per side.
At present Brutus popularity is growing thanks to Jerries Snackette, on Camp Street who has given us the opportunity to display our merchandise, Everything Music Record Bar who has a programme on 98.1 Hot FM (our local 24 hour music radio channel) Channel Six Television Station who follows the Band on all their road shows and feature us on their evening news Prime News.
